The War is Over!
December 7, 1941 is a date that lives in infamy. Early that morning, Japanese pilots made a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Thousands of lives were lost and numerous ships destroyed, and yet the biggest outcome from that attack was that America joined World War Two.
There are many fascinating aspects of that well-studied war, and yet I learned a new one this week. Even though the war in Europe ended on May 8, 1945 and the war with Japan ended on September 2 of that same year, there were many soldiers who continued to fight for days, weeks, and even months after the war was over. I had heard of this ongoing fighting. But I had not heard of Hiroo Onoda.
